Watching Waterstones after owner puts book chain up for sale

Wanting out: Talk has surfaced that Waterstones may be sold. MercuryBooks, parent company of the WordGo imprint, hears that ownership of the High Street chain is ‘in play’ after its Russian owner Alexander Mamut hung out a ‘For Sale’ notice.

Waterstones is on the market for a new owner.

“All our titles are available through Waterstones – either in stock or on order – so we are naturally following events closely,” said MercuryBooks publisher Richard Meredith.

The company’s finances have improved greatly under MD James Daunt and corporate financiers NM Rothschild are said to be briefing possible bidders but no deal is expected until the New Year.
