Library book spend falls £45m in a decade …

The amount of money libraries are spending on books has fallen by £45.8m since 2007, analysis of figures from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has revealed.

It says 105 libraries closed in 2017 (67 in 2016)  after the Government slashed funding by £25m and described the closures as “catastrophic”.

 Meanwhile, the long decline of independent bookstores may be ending, according to an end-of-year report by the Booksellers’ Association.

There are still only a few in the south Midlands, but one notable recent addition is Booksmiths – a home for new, used and antiquarian books in the old Royal Ordnance Depot at Weedon Bec off the A5
